Here’s what I find very wrong with how we groom our daughters…
The way her father’s reputation is associated with the dupatta she wears
the way she is told to speak in a low tone, not to be very bold and aggresive
the way she is hushed when she tries to speak about her views on a certain family issue
the way she is bought pink dolls when she wants a gun or a truck
the way she is taught how to cook when all she wants is to play cricket
the way she is told to keep her education to herself because feminism is just a concept in the books and women’s labor is our culture which we should adopt without questioning
Oh and how questioning is prohibited for girls
they cannot ask too many questions
all they have to do is say yes and bow down in respect to the decisions of the male femily members
her mind is too delicate to bore the weight of asking and understanding things
she is too feeble, too weak, too delicate
The way she is told to button up her shirt just because he bare skin is the reason some male chauvinist pigs were looking at her on the street
Eversince I have grown up and started understanding things, I have hated the word culture.
Its thrown at our face like a ready made totka to our dark skin to lighten it up
everytime we ask something.
Why cant I wear the dress I like? Culture
Why cant I go to my room when I dont to attend your guests? Culture
Why cant I go out for an icecream at 8pm? Culture
Why cant I put on red lipstick instead of a lighter shade? Culture
Why cant I sit like my brother? Culture
that is bad in our culture, this is not liked in our culture, culture culture culture
Do you even know that there is a thing called reasoning which will work better in convincing me to not do something than just throwing culture at my face?
Damn you and your culture if all it does is draws a line around a girl and tells her to remain within that boundryline for the rest of her life
Here’s what I will teach my daughter and try to turn every wrong into a right by
telling her that her dupatta has nothing to do with her father’s reputation
that she can speak as loud and clear as she can, she dosnt needs to be hushed
that she can sit the way she liked
and that she dosnt needs to dress up according to the validation of the people on the streets but according to her own asthetic viewpoint
that she has equal say in the matters of the family as her brother
and she can use her education in practical senses in her own life
she dosnt needs to dim her light in order to be accepted by the society
and she can choose whatever profession she wants to
that she is beautiful just the way she is, she dosnt needs the products of capitalism to whiten her skin, slim her body, put on 5 layers of powder on her face in order to feel prettier, that she should be more proud of who she is without needing any products to define her
that she dosnt needs to be defined by a 5 lettered adjective, that she can be who she wants to be
that her beauty is not skin deep but is in her mind, that she needs to be better educated and taught life skills instead of teaching her to be ladylike
that she can live her life by her own standards and principles not according to some nonsensical culture of yours
and that she is still a respectable women in all of that…
