They tell you about mitochondria being the powerhouse of the cell but what they forget to tell you is that someday, when you turn 21, the world will be too small to fit it or too big, ready to gulp your entire being down.
In schools, they tell you about calculating the angles by Pythagoras’s theory but what they dont tell you is how to calculate meaning in life when the heaviness in your chest is larger than the arm of a rightangle triangle.
Did they tell you that you dont matter in the bigger picture.
There are galaxies colliding and dark energy forming out of nothing that no human intellect can prove yet they calculate your worth based on the number of As you got in high school.
They told you about religion and how it taught equality but forgot that when you turn 23, the sound of your ambitions will not be heard over the loud wedding bells.
They taught you how marriage is a beautiful social contract between a man woman yet they forgot to tell you that women feed on sacrifices for breakfast and serve respect and loyalty for dinner. They tell you about education yet forget that misogyny and patriarchy are mere concepts that should not be questioned. That the girl next door with bruises on her face deserves to be slapped cus she cant keep her voice low. she is too loud, like the salt in ammas karahi sometimes. That Jupiter has rings but so has women’s fingers, which is closely connected to the heart through an artery. But what about the girl who was forced to wear that ring? Did her hatred turned into love instantly as soon as she wore it? Much like the 2 mins instant noodles you make in an electric kettle in your dorm room which reminds you of how home is an abstract concept. You have changed places so many times that you dont remember how home feels like.
Did they tell you that the grief you wear in your ears much like your ammas jhumkas have caused your ears to ache, from the generational trauma that you dont want to suffer from. But it runs in the family, from one generation to the next. We are told not to talk to strangers but strangely enough, we marry them.
We are taught to be nice, pure and pious so that some random men will not associate a 4 lettered adjective with your name and call you slut if your voice is louder or your crop top shorter.
Your body is a sanctuary that should be taken care of, its full of secrets which shouldn’t be talked about. Don’t go to the mosque if you are on your period because it’s forbidden. We are taught to feel guilty for our womanhood.
We are taught to be pretty, soft, and tender.
What are girls without their looks anyway? I m tired and weary of being called pretty or beautiful. As if beauty is all we have.
They tell you about the story of sleeping beauty being saved by the prince but did they tell you about why sleeping beauty overdosed in the first place?
We live in a society where everything is romanticized, even pain. But we dont talk about how pain feels or what a woman goes through, or what a man sacrifices in his life. All we want to hear is people being saved by people. But this is no fairytale, it’s life. Here no one saves you. You save yourself or you get along with the pain.
They told you about the syllables in English languages but did they tell you that one day, you will run out of words, and fuck you will be the only word you know because it will be oddly satisfying to your decaying heart and rotting bones.
Darwin’s theory is what they taught you in school, but they forget to tell you that in the real world, everyone you meet is good at something that you suck at. This is not a competition for survival. Its not game of thrones where you either live or die. Its life. You coexist with others. And that one day, we will all be people who lived!!
